Note: The goal of this project is to conduct the first search for new elementary particles decaying to highly energetic top quarks that relies significantly on the recently improved high-resolution tracking system of the ATLAS detector at CERN. The search is well motivated by theoretical models proposed in response to a number of open questions concerning the Higgs mechanism through which particles acquire mass. It will explore the highest energy and mass ranges, which - for the first time - become accessible at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which has been upgraded to operate close to its full design energy from June 2015 onwards. The sensitivity of current searches is severely limited at high energies by the angular resolution of the ATLAS calorimeter system, which fails to resolve the highly collimated decay products of very energetic top quarks. I propose a method to overcome this instrumental limitation through the use of tracking information, which will allow my search to fully explore the unprecendented energy range now accessible at the LHC.
