000205404 520__ $$aThis report is an experimental study of the conversion af laser light into x-rays in a hohlraum target. By these experiments, the proposed indirect target design for energy loss measurements of swift heavy ions in a dense plasma has been explored. The experiments take place at Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI), Darmstadt, Germany. For the experiments, the nhelix laser is used. This is a Nd:YAG/Nd:glass based laser system, wavelength λ = 1064 nm, pulse length (FWHM) 14 ns and energy EL = 60 − 100 J. The targets are prepared for determining the optimum parameters for x-ray conversion. The targets are gold cylinders, 1−1.5 mm of length and outer diameter 1 mm. The inner diameter is either 500 μm or 700 μm. The cylinder is covered at the x-ray exit window with either a 0.5 μm polypropylene foil or 80−110 nm gold foils. The radiation leaving the target is characterized using coated Si-diodes and pinhole cameras. The radiation temperature is determined and an estimation of the conversion efficiency is given.The optimum target parameters have been determined to be: target length L = 1 mm, inner diameter D = 700 μm and foil thickness d: 80 nm < d < 110 nm. An upper limit of the radiation temperature is ∼ 10 eV . The conversion efficiency is estimated to be ≤ 1%. This is reasonable with the present laser parameters.
