Kann Alzheimer mit Glucocorticosteroiden behandelt werden?
Note: What is being researched? Inflammatory processes in the brain play an important role in Alzheimer's disease and are therefore extensively researched. So-called glucocorticosteroids (GCC), which include cortisone, could possibly have a positive effect on this inflammation. GCC are hormones that are made by the adrenal cortex and that have anti-inflammatory effects. The working group around Dr. Oberländer from the DZNE Bonn has evaluated health insurance data that suggest that taking GCC through the nose reduces the risk of later developing dementia. In this project, the question is investigated whether GCC can actually inhibit inflammation in the brain and whether this improves learning and memory processes and stops nerve cell death. How is Dr. Oberländer before? Dr. Kristin Oberländer and her team will use so-called Alzheimer's mice to research whether GCC has the expected inhibitory effect on inflammatory processes in the brain. To this end, two different studies are being launched in which Alzheimer's mice are treated with GCC nasal drops. The first study is being carried out at a time when the protein deposits of amyloid beta that are typical for Alzheimer's disease have not yet formed. The second study examines the effect of GCC when the first symptoms can already be observed. This will determine the best time for a possible therapy. In addition to a memory test, the mice are examined for inflammation, beta-amyloid deposits and the health of the neurons. What is the aim of the research project? If these examinations are positive, a large clinical study with an active ingredient containing GCC could then be planned in order to develop an effective therapy in the long term.
