abstract = {Since the beginning of the early quantum mechanics, devices
have been built to detect as wellas to manipulate spins of
atoms. Those have been investigated as beams, samples or
used astargets. Key tools for manipulating spins are
external fields with which excitations are possible. To get a
better understanding on how this process happens and how to
use their final properties, simulations are needed. Those are
produced out of theoretical quantum mechanical
calculations. Therefore, this thesis deals with the topic of
simulating occupation numbers of hyperfine substatesin the
presence of external fields. In particular the simulations
of already existing devices such asa spin filter or a Sona
transition unit are done. As the experimental set-up works
with metastable$2S_{1/2}$ hydrogen atoms, the main part of
this thesis describes the results for those kind of atoms.
Inthe final part, a general description for any kind of
hyperfine substates inside the Sona transitionunit is
taken.},
