520 _ _ |a As the works at FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) progress deeper into the installation and near the commissioning phase, FAIR control system gets closer to its final shape. With many software parts for the accelerator controls completed, valuable experience has been gained from the encountered managerial challenges. In this paper, we present the best practices and lessons learned from tackling challenges in the scopes of managing contributions from in-kind partners, consortia and other contractors, project planning, establishing effective communication and coordination between in-house teams and outside partners, applying agile concepts, dealing with dynamics at FAIR and others.
