Abstract: An overview of the prevailing experimental conditions at the CERN--LHC for heavy-ion collisions is given. Observables, in particular those unique to the LHC energy regime, are discussed. The experimental challenges and physics potential of detector subsystems --- TPC and TRD --- are reviewed in some detail.
