Scientific Director of GSI in Darmstadt and Professor
emeritus of the TUM (Technische Universität München). He
passed away on January 29, 2013. Besides many other
outstanding achievements we owe him the construction and
successful operation of both, the fragment separator FRS and
the storage ring ESR, for more than 20 years now. His
tireless passion and absolute devotion to physics stays as a
hardly accessible example for all of us. Until the very last
days of his life Paul Kienle worked on the finalization of
this manuscript and we tried to preserve his latest
suggestions to this Letter. His death is an irreplaceable
loss for our collaboration and for the physics community.},
